Agents no longer responding- how are they getting away with that?

In case you haven't read the info at agent's web sites, most of them now say they aren't even going to bother hiring interns to send out rejection letters. They just say if you don't hear from them, it means you got rejected. If we don't hear from them? How long are we supposed to wait until we decide we got rejected? Are they kidding? What kind of a business do they think they are running? How can they get away with treating writers like dirt when they make their money off of authors?
