Sure, I believe it, at least with regard to the big-time agents. Most of them are just looking for an excuse to say no. For new writers at least, the whole agent business is dead end right now. Because of the constriction of the fiction market, only the famous authors make money. As a result, the agents (who have to make a living) are more and more becoming short-term, bottom-line oriented. There is little percentage in working with new writers so they don't bother.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but right now such pessimism seems warranted (to me). Want a hopeful statement? The internet is the future.
