: Do we really need an agent? Everybody says it's impossible to get an agent these days. But other types of publishing (print on demand, ebook publishing on the internet, etc) are growing so fast maybe the era of the literary agent is at an end.

The big issue with self publishing, even POD, is marketing. It's the publisher's biggest expense and for good reason: readers have to know about your book to even get interested in buying it. However, the internet may be changing everything. If you can get links to your self-published book on the internet and get some buzz going there, it's possible you could make more money than you could with a regular publisher.
