Right, but he said novelists would no longer play a significant role in our society. He said the novel was dead in the same way poetry was dead meaning the audience for "serious" novels was diminishing and would soon be seen the same way poetry is seen (intended only for self-proclaimed intellectuals and university students who are forced by their professors to read such things).
