I read the first chapter as part of a review on the Denver Post. A bit confusing because too many characters are introduced right away and because the main character (at least I think he's the main character) narrates in his own odd lingo. But it's an interesting story about what goes on behind the scenes at a run-down horse racing facility.

I agree that it's a surprising winner for this prestigious award. I'm surprised it was even nominated.

: This site says the 2010 National Book Award winner was also a long shot, Jaimy Gordon for her novel Lord of Misrule. Anybody read it? Any good?
