Richard Morgan won the 2008 Arthur C. Clarke Science Fiction Award for his novel "Thirteen".

Described as a rip-roaring thriller for the 21st century, the book is set in the future. Against all odds, Earth has found a stability and the new colony on Mars is being developed. However, genetically engineered alpha males, designed to fight the century's wars have no wars to fight and are surplus to requirements (does this sound like a familiar plot?). It's about prejudice, and about the ramifications of playing with our genetic blue-print.
