She's a Romanian-born German, only the 12th woman to ever win the Nobel (I predict there will be more, now that women are on the committee).

She has been praised for her portraits of life behind the Iron Curtain.

The committee hailed her depictions of "the landscape of the dispossessed" with a "the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose."

Her response: "I am very surprised and still can not believe it."

She was born in Romania in 1953. Her father served in the Waffen SS during World War II.

Her latest novel "Atemschaukel," was published this year. It depicts the exile of German Romanians in the Soviet Union.

"Her work is a little dense for American readers, because it is so layered," said Philip Boehm, who co-translated "The Appointment."

: This just in: the 2009 Nobel prize for literature goes to 56-year old German novelist Herta Müller.

: The only statement about her at nobel.org is:

: "who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed"
