The Case of the Lost Land Grant

by Errol Edock

A Drew Steele Murder Mystery

This murder mystery is set in the American West during the traumatic post-Civil War period. It begins when San Francisco detective Drew Steele is hired by newspaperman John Rudd to go to the Arizona territory to try to find a long-lost Spanish land grant that is rumored to cover the entire Arizona territory. What at first seems like a routine investigation, turns out to be an adventure that threatens to cost Steele his life. He confronts hired killers, marauding Indians, and a beautiful young woman who is unwilling to take no for an answer.

This fast-paced story has more twists and turns than a runaway river in flood stage: a mysterious Chinese whore house at the edge of town that nobody will admit ever visiting, a treasure map that is supposed to lead to gold but actually leads only to a deadly trap, and a famous Apache warrior who is feared by everyone, but who may be Steele's only hope.

For a limited time, this book can be purchased for only $4.85 (or

The Case of the Renegade Confederates

by Errol Edock

A Drew Steele Murder Mystery

This murder mystery is set in the American West during the traumatic post-Civil War period. The story begins when Edward Kane, the owner of San Francisco's largest newspaper, is taken hostage by a renegade Confederate General in retaliation for the post-Civil War trials of Confederate officers (many of the clues in this story are based on actual Civil War events). San Francisco detective Drew Steele is hired to get Kane back. Steele goes across the border into Mexico to negotiate an exchange of prisoners, but the situation is complicated when Kane's beautiful, but troublesome, daughter is also captured. Steele learns the General has put together an army of seasoned Confederate soldiers, and with the help of a mysterious Mexican militia group, he plans to continue the Civil War as a guerrilla war.

This novel has it all: gun fights, Indian attacks, warfare, and a beautiful girl in grave danger who can be saved only if Steele can outwit one of the Confederacy's most brilliant Generals.

For a limited time, this book can be purchased for only $4.85 (or

The Case of the Swallowed Clues

by Errol Edock

A Drew Steele IV Murder Mystery

This is the first of a series of current-day murder mysteries featuring LA detective Drew Steele IV (the great great grandson of the famous Civil-War era detective). In this novel, Steele is still recovering from life-threatening injuries he suffered from an al-Qaeda IED explosion while he was working as a private contractor for "The Company" in Iraq. His legs were severely damaged and the doctors were forced to remove his left foot to save his life. They said he'd never walk again, but with the help of a high-tech prosthetic foot, he proved them wrong. Although he walks with a limp, don't call him a cripple; he's still one of the most sought-after and successful detectives in LA.

In this novel, Steele is working on a new case that starts out as a typical missing-person search for a walk-away Las Vegas casino boss. But the case turns strange and dangerous when the missing man turns up dead with a startling warning message burned into his forehead. When the autopsy finds a grisly surprise in the dead man's stomach, Steele suspects it was put there to suggest the murder is connected to the international drug trade and a mysterious LA criminal hideout that the police are not allowed to go into. But who are the clues intended for?

This novel has surprises at every turn: suspects who end up dead, a killer who is both smart and ruthless, an amazing white-knuckled car chase and shootout through LA traffic, and an attractive young women who seems to be willing to go beyond being merely helpful, but may know more about the murders than she is saying.

For a limited time, this book can be purchased for only $4.85 (or

Harp's Song

by Aaron Aachen

A Harp (and his mother) Murder Mystery

This is a current-day murder mystery featuring a likable young man known only as Harp. Harp, who lives under the Santa Monica pier, wakes up one morning to find a dead body lying nearby on the beach. He soon becomes the prime suspect and the only way he can prove his innocence is to find the real killer. He begins his "investigation" by questioning the Venice Beach street performers such as Bailey the Balancing Man, Adelle the Sidewalk Artist, and Cedric the Chain-Saw Juggler.

Oh, did I mention Harp is "assisted" in his investigation by his long-dead mother who still lives on in his head. Whether Harp likes it or not, his mother is always there in his mind, always demanding, always chiding, always criticizing, but also often providing him with useful advice about how to solve the murder mystery. Her frequent apocryphal Biblical quotations and references to the most horrific of Grimm's fairy tales (that were Harp's only education), weave a subplot of impulsion and obsession that systematically guides us toward the (double) surprise ending.

This delightful novel is populated by an amazing variety of strange and interesting Venice Beach characters who "help" Harp solve the mystery. They include, Shoeless Joe, a big, lovable, child-like black man who takes good care of the tops of his shoes, but doesn't know he's completely worn away the bottoms by his incessant pacing, the Blind Shrimp who pretends to be blind, but never misses a stray coin lying on the sidewalk or a chance for personal gain, the Merry-Go-Round Girl, a rough, sexually-curious country girl recently come to the big city who sees only Harp's gentleness, Leon the South Mountain Indian, a former LA gang member who is trying to run away from the violence of his childhood, Speel the Sayer, a gay woman who pretends to be a male and only speaks in cliches, and The Ghost who never leaves his boarded-up stall in the men's rest room, but seems to know everything that goes on outside.

This book is a must-read for anyone who likes murder mysteries, Grimm's fairy tales, or the kind of crazy characters who inhabit Venice Beach. For a limited time, this book can be purchased for only $4.85.
