For me, the first draft is to find the story. Last year I started a novel about a girl finding love in Montana, but it turned into a girl and her horse story. I'm working on the second draft now, but still deciding things. Maybe as it gets more nailed down I'll be able to start thinking about things like language and pacing and things like that.
