: I'm rooting for my internet hero, experimental writer Lydia Davis (Varieties of Disturbance), but it'll probably go to Denis Johnson for his massive book about Vietnam, "Tree of Smoke." (His first full-length novel in nine years.) After all he has an endowed chair in creative writing at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas so he has to win, doesn't he? Well, who knows, but we probably can't have too many books about Vietnam (to remind us not to go rampaging off to small foreign countries to show them the American way). Any other votes on this forum?

What about Mischa Berlinski's "Fieldwork"? I think it has a good chance. They sometimes like the international flavor.
